Brad Is Mad! [Breaking Sailing News]

The choice of the Middle East emirate of Ras al Khaimah for the next America’s Cup has been vetoed in the latest in a barrage of law suits lodged by the challenger BMW Oracle in the New York Supreme Court.

Judge Shirley Kornreich ruled that, under the terms of the rules governing the event, drawn up in 1887, the match scheduled for February next year, must either be staged in Valencia or in the southern hemisphere.

Her decision was based on the stipulation in the 1887 Deed of Gift that the America's Cup cannot be sailed in the Northern Hemisphere between Nov. 1 and May 1, not on concerns by the Americans that RAK was unsafe due to its proximity to Iran.

"I don't believe that I have the ability to deviate from the Deed of Gift," Kornreich said.

Meanwhile in RAK:
Alinghi's New Zealand skipper Brad Butterworth accused Oracle of delaying tactics.

"BMW Oracle should clean up their unsportsmanlike behavior with a dose of saltwater and sunshine and challenge for the Cup on the water. Otherwise they should stand aside and let other teams compete," he said. Boo hoo, Larry Ellison is a big meany.

What a joke this race has become......well, it's always been a joke. One design is the closest we get to real racing.

Sailing Photo Of The Day. Paper Tiger Cat.

Peter Robbins sailing PT 888.

The Paper Tiger Catamaran is an exciting 4.3m (14ft) single-handed catamaran that provides competitive one-design racing for beginners through to champions. The class rules ensure tight control over the major dimensions of the boat which guarantees exceptional racing, yet they provide the freedom to experiment with gear and equipment for the boat.

Background from Wikipedia:
In 1967 when Ron Given was discussing with friends how he planned to design a father and son training catamaran which he proposed to build on a simple mould by sticking plywood together with fibreglass tape, his friends began to comment that he may as well use sticky paper. Eventually, the word 'paper' and also the description of 'paper boat' kept coming to mind during talks about the new boat. As a result, 'paper' soon became part of the name, followed by 'tiger' because the tiger is an active member of the cat family. By the end of 1967 five Paper Tigers were built and one made its debut at Cat Week during January 1968 at Brown's Bay, New Zealand. By the end of 1968 the New Zealand Paper Tiger Catamaran Owner's Association had been formed.

Class Information:

  • The 14 foot, one design hulls can be professionally or amateur built from fibreglass with foam sandwich or marine ply with both methods providing a long competitive boat life.
  • A minimum hull weight of 50kg ensures that the Tiger can be easily handled by teenagers, adults and veteran sailors.
  • The Paper Tiger points high into the wind, has an exhilarating acceleration, runs well downwind and above all is deslightfully responsive. These attributres thrill the pleasure sailor and racing skippers.

Specifications:
The basic specifications for the Paper Tiger Catamaran are set out below. For more detailed information, please refer to the Class Rules.

  • Length Overall  4.26 m [14 ft]
  • Beam (width)  2.13 m [7 ft]
  • Sail Area  9.29 m2 [100 sq ft]
  • Mast Length 6.78 m [22 ft 3 in]
  • Weight (unrigged) 50 kg [110 lb]
  • Weight Rigged 73 kg [160 lb]

Friday Fishwrap.

Sailworld: Ericsson 4 takes Volvo lead - Puma on a charge into second.
I'm confused, Ericsson is a phone, Volvo is a car, Puma is a shoe and a Cougar, which is also a car and an older woman who dates younger men. Can I have a drink now?

Russell Coutts is on Twitter....1 post from March...."No wind today again. Better luck next time." He actually sails, while I'm here typing. Grrrrrr!

Frank thinks about humility. Puffy found some wind, in fact he sailed, sailed and sailed. In the morning, "it hurt to pick up the orange juice carton." Amen brother, you had a good day!

Peter, "Spurt mot Boston." Whatever dude, don't you know you're supposed to write in English!
Awesome pics of the Cell Phone boat.

Michael (not Puffy, but my former protege) gives us a reading assignment. I'm not in school damn it!

Jake gives us a couple of videos. Craig gives us a video that Jake should enjoy.

Bonnie's notice of a ..... no! .....No! ...... NO! .......OH MY GOD, NO! A Laser Regatta sponsored by the Sebago Canoe Club. I wonder if the Tillerman will be there? Speaking of the Tillerman, I could point to one post but can't. They're all freaking good. Gee whiz, the guy can write.

Speaking of writers, Edward has been writing up a storm over at the Examiner. I wonder if he knows Michael Barone?

What? David actually has a post without a mermaid involved!

Joe want's to know. Adam, "Will there be more posts? Who is next, John Franklin?  gCaptain, "What is it?" Tugster asks, "What are they fishing?" "Who would imagine commercial fishing happens right between Manhattan and Hoboken?"

Have you jumped on the Alaia bandwagon yet? Surfer Magazine catches up with Tom Wegener. Olosurfer gives you step by step instructions on making an Alaia.

If this is the Fish Wrap, where's the fish? Buster serves us a video. There is no way to say it other than, Catch Magazine is out-and-out fish porn!

Moldy Chum asks, "What do you do with 100 million carp?" Tom thinks that trout season is almost here. He could be right.
Where's that drink?

Jake, Here's One For You. Oops!

Jake, of Team Seacats, brought to my attention that the previous post, "Wednesday Wipeout," was in fact not a wipeout since the boat pictured recovered and did not picthpole. That's what happens when you have a sloppy staff writer who would rather watch wahines at the beach than do thorough research. (note: there is only one staff writer at "The Horse's Mouth.....Oops.) So in my zeal to protect the public interest I present to you the photo above. I would say that it qualifies as a wipeout. I apologize and ask for your forgiveness for my mistake. Now pour me a double shot of tequila and let's get back to the movie.

Puluwat sailing canoes coming home.

From Guy (Guy is "The Yellowstone guy."):
LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY I WAS AN ANTROPOLOGY PROFESSOR.

You should locate and read "East Is A Big Bird" by Thomas Gladwin. The detail of the canoes, the seamanship, and the sheer balls of the navigators is telling of the seafaring wanderlust.
-- I loved the map of your last post.

Guy

Thanks Guy, I ordered it today from Amazon.
Cheers, Joe

P.S. Wahines to come.

Gidiup Little Horsey. Thomas Coville, Ride'm Cowboy !
